1. The Vanishing Heritage of Kannada Digital Typography

Before modern OpenType and Unicode standards emerged, Kannada typographers created custom font families like KN-TTUma, KN-TTSurekh, Padmini, Ganesh, Chanakya, and Shree to overcome the limitations of early computers. Millions of pages of Kannada literature, university dissertations, government gazettes, and historical records were published using these specialized fonts.

Because these fonts were distributed on physical 3.5-inch floppy disks, companion CD-ROMs, and legacy Windows 95/98 installations, they are rapidly becoming inaccessible. Many original font foundry disks have suffered bit-rot, hardware obsolescence, or complete loss as older publishing houses modernized their equipment.

2. The "Unreadable Archive" Crisis

When modern operating systems open an old InDesign, PageMaker, or Microsoft Word file typeset in an obsolete ISFOC font that is missing from the system, the text renders as meaningless ASCII gibberish or empty boxes. Without the exact matching font file and its unique glyph encoding table, converting the text back into readable modern Unicode is nearly impossible.

At Lipi, our mission is to build robust, universal WebAssembly converters that can faithfully decode every historic Kannada font encoding into permanent, searchable, future-proof Unicode text.

3. Community Call: Help Us Preserve Rare Kannada Fonts

We have spent countless hours scouring old hard drives, academic institutions, and print shops across Karnataka to find original ISFOC font files and documentation. However, dozens of rare variants remain missing from our preservation archives.

If you, your printing press, or your organization possess old DTP floppy disks, CD-ROMs, or rare Kannada TrueType font collections (such as older ISFOC, C-DAC GIST, or proprietary pre-Unicode fonts), please help us archive and support them. Share your font files and documentation directly with our research team at [email protected].

  • Contact: Send attachments or download links to [email protected].
  • What to Share: Any legacy TrueType (.ttf), Type 1 (.pfb), font layout sheets, or older DTP source documents.
  • Goal: Every contributed font helps us calibrate universal WebAssembly decoders so historic Kannada works remain readable for future generations.
