The Inscript Standard (IS 16350)
Inscript divides the keyboard logically based on the phonetic structure of Brahmic scripts: all vowels are positioned on the left side of the keyboard, while all consonants are grouped on the right side. Inscript is standardized across all official Indian languages—once you master Inscript for Kannada, you can type in Hindi, Telugu, or Bengali with the exact same finger muscle memory.
Ideal for: Professional typists, court stenographers, government employees, and anyone preparing for state and central government typing examinations.
The Phonetic (Nudi) Method
Phonetic typing maps sounds directly to familiar English letters. To write "ಕಲಿತ" (kalita), you simply type the letters "k", "a", "l", "i", "t", "a". Consonant conjuncts (vattus) are formed by pressing the virama/halant key ("f" in Nudi).
Ideal for: Content creators, journalists, students, and everyday casual users who already touch-type in English and want zero learning curve.
